About Mental Health
Mental Health is fundamental to physical
health. It is indispensable to person well-being, and to leading a balanced and
productive life. Stigma and its accompanying discrimination is the greatest
barrier we face when addressing the issue of mental health. The greatest weapons
against stigma are information and knowledge.
Approximately 1 in 5 Americans is affected by a mental illness and mental health problems can occur in anyone, regardless of race, gender, age or socioeconomic status. In the last 20 years, scientific study of the brain and behavior have led to new and very effective treatments for persons with mental illness. Mental illnesses are among the most treatable diseases, with a success rate of over 70% in many cases. Quality of life is tremendously improved when a mental disorder is diagnosed and treated appropriately.
If you are experiencing mental or emotional difficulty, seeking help is just as important (and normal) as when you have symptoms of a physical illness.
