Community and Residential Programs
Northwestern Apartments & Adult Foster Care
100 Gretchen
Lane, Crookston, MN 56716
Northwestern Apartments
Northwestern Apartments provides psychiatric rehabilitation services in a community residential setting. The facility is operated by Northwestern Mental Health Center, Inc. of Crookston and treats up to 14 adults at any one time with serious mental illnesses, providing them with the skills to return to the community and lead healthy lives.
Each resident lives in and maintains a
furnished apartment situated in an attractive nine-unit building. Each apartment has two bedrooms, a
living room, dining area, kitchen, bathroom, and storage area. This allows residents to reside in the
community while still receiving treatment services. Residents pay subsidized rent, budget their money, buy groceries, plan and
prepare meals, take care of an apartment, and other tasks consistent with
community living - all with the assistance, support, and training of our
staff. Some of the services provided include: 24/7 supervision;
individualized treatment planning and goal-setting; individual and group
counseling; group treatment based on a Dialectical Behavior Therapy model;
social, recreational, leisure, and independent living skills training;
medication services; work programs; help with securing benefits and accessing
community services; and follow-up services through Northwestern Mental Health
Center after discharge from the residential facility.
Northwestern Apartments accepts male and female adults who have a serious mental illness, are in need of treatment, and able to reside in the community. The program accepts people with thought disorders, affective disorders, severe personality disorders, and other severe psychiatric disorders. Referrals must be at least 18 years old and residents of Minnesota.
Northwestern Adult Foster Care
Northwestern Mental Health Center, Inc. has expanded its service continuum in mental health treatment to include Adult Foster Care for people upon discharge from a psychiatric hospitalization or at risk of hospitalization due to serious and persistent mental illness. Northwestern Adult Foster Care (NWFC), as a component of Northwestern Apartments, is a transitional home providing quality supervised living for 4 people with 24-hour staff availability in a safe, healthy, and supportive apartment style environment with staff directly supervising residents in their living quarters. The Adult Foster Care Program is more intensive than the traditional Northwestern Apartments program.
NWFC
incorporates two comfortably furnished apartments containing four bedrooms, two
bathrooms,
separate
dining and living areas, and home style kitchens. These accommodations coupled
with the
comfortable
common
areas, meeting room, and reception area create a warm atmosphere which provides
space for both private and social interaction. Individual residents are
encouraged, through NWFC staff supports and assistance, to maintain independence
in tasks of daily living such as hygiene, grooming, dressing, eating, taking
medications, mobility, and simple housekeeping. NWFC staff will provide
assistance and training in instrumental tasks of daily living, such as daily
scheduling, arranging transportation, clothing care, housekeeping, food
preparation, money management, shopping, using the
telephone or computer to communicate, participating in community activities and
attending medical appointments. The professional staff provide an
environment for individuals to work toward their personal recovery goals.
NWFC accepts male and female adults who have a serious mental illness and are in need of transitional housing. Referrals must be at least 18 years old and residents of Minnesota. The NWFC is not a long-term care facility and regards a general length of stay in support of resident independence, productivity, and inclusion in the community at 9-18 months, based on need.
*Both Northwestern Apartments and Northwestern Foster Care receive support from HUD and the United Way.
Northwestern Minnesota Disaster Response Network
Do memories of a major disaster bother you?
Are you nervous about the coming winter?
Are you tired of filling out disaster-related forms?
Have you lost your job because of the disaster?
Are you running out of time and patience repairing your home?
Are you having a hard time communicating with your family and friends?
Have you asked questions and not received answers that help?
Many people in Northwestern Minnesota are facing the challenges of disaster-related recovery. We are dealing with unusual circumstances while getting on with our every day lives. However, we may have less energy and enthusiasm than we had before the disaster.
The need to recover from our losses is very natural and can sometimes create physical, financial, emotional, social, and spiritual hardships. We should expect to feel many different emotions and reactions as we rebuild our lives.
Physical well-being:
Recovering form a major disaster can have a lasting impact on our physical health. Some symptoms include: loss or increase in appetite, trouble sleeping, weariness, migraines, upper respiratory (breathing) difficulties, or stomach upset.
Financial hardship:
Our incomes may have been greatly reduced since the disaster. We all have bills to pay and may find the added expenses of rebuilding our homes one more hardship. Everyone in the community has suffered some financial loss in one way or another.
Emotions:
Sometimes it is impossible to recognize or express our emotions during a disaster. However, once we begin to rebuild our communities we also allow ourselves the time to express our sense of shock, grief, and loss. This may be expressed by confusion, irritability, anxiety, fear, grief, depression, anger, or frustration.
Social Structure:
There has also been an impact on our social structure. Many organizations, families, friends or individuals we normally talk, play, or volunteer with may no longer be available to us since the disaster. Or sometimes as we may not communicate as well as they respond to their own reactions to the disaster.
Spirituality:
Sometimes we can have a crisis in our spiritual beliefs. We can wonder why all this upheaval is happening to us. Having someone to talk to about our circumstances can be an important way to handle different situations.
If you are experiencing any
hardships including:
physical
financial
emotional
social
spiritual
as a result of the disaster and its aftermath
OR
if you just want someone to talk to or know of someone who needs to let off a little steam... THEN WE ARE HERE TO HELP!
